The Akron Fire Department, just over the Genesee County line, is getting a big check from the feds.
Akron F.D. applied for and won a $645,000 grant for recruitment. The money will be used to provide college scholarships to first responders and their families. Scholarships will also be used as incentive for new hires.
The grant comes through the Department of Homeland Security’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program.
