The driver of an ethanol tanker that overturned and caught fire this morning in Orleans County, has died.

The unidentified driver was killed shortly after 4:00am when his truck, loaded with 8,000 gallons of ethanol, apparently failed to negotiate a curve and ran off of East Lee Road in Barre.

Once off the road, the truck exploded. Witnesses reported hearing three explosions. The surrounding woods also caught fire.

Burning ethanol requires the use of foam to extinguish. The foam and other related firefighting equipment had to be brought in from Kodak in Rochester. Four volunteer fire companies from Genesee County also responded.

The Orleans County Sheriff's Office said the tanker was owned by Flying "J" Transportation based in Ogden, Utah.

A section of East Lee Rd. between Powerline Rd. and E. Barre Rd. remains closed as the accident is under investigation. It is expected to remain closed into the afternoon hours
