A young girl struck by a car while biking on West Main Street is expected to be okay today, after she was dragged and pinned under a vehicle pulling out of a parking lot.

13-years-old Emily Sherman is listed in stable condition at Strong Memorial Hospital this afternoon. Batavia Police Lieutenant Eugene Jankowski says Sherman was riding bikes with a friend on the sidewalk past Denny’s Restaurant at about 12:50pm this afternoon. At the same time, 23-year-old Erin George was exiting Denny’s driveway in her Ford Taurus.

George apparently never saw the girls riding, struck Sherman, and dragged both girl and bike into the roadway before stopping.

Lieutenant Jankowski says responders worked quickly to free Emily Sherman. She was Mercy Flighted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, likely as a precaution. Her friend was not hurt.

Traffic was diverted off of West Main Street for about a half-hour this afternoon.

I can't tell you how many bicyclist I have had near misses with because they are riding on the sidewalk, which I always thought was illegal. Apparently it is not as I have witnessed City Police drive right past these bicyclist without a look back. It is very dangerous to ride on the sidewalk as there are many obstructions that motorists cannot see past as they enter driveways either to enter a business or exit a business. By that time, wham, there's the bike. I am thankful this little girl was not hurt more then she was and I wish her a speedy recovery. Time to start stopping children and chatting with them and time to start ticketing the adults (the biggest offenders).
