Darien Lake’s own rule book states clearly that persons without legs should not ride its Ride of Steel roller coaster.
But war vet James Hackemer, who lost both legs to a roadside bomb in Iraq, was allowed to ride last Friday.
He slipped out of the front seat of the coaster, and fell to his death.
Although the ride operators violated the park’s rules, their actions did not rise to a criminal offense.
Darien Lake could still be held accountable in a civil lawsuit.
James Hackemer was in the very first seat of the Ride of Steel last Friday. He made it about halfway through when he was thrown out of the car by the sheer force of the ride.
