Village of Albion Police refused to release any further information today at a news conference regarding a Saturday morning homicide at a local apartment.
32-year-old David Groves of Albion was shot at 12:45am Saturday, while he was in the basement of an apartment building at 222 West State Street. He managed to stumble back to his nearby residence, where his girlfriend discovered the gunshot wound and called 911. Groves was Mercy Flighted to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
That's all Village Police would say about the shooting.
A total of 15 times, Police Chief Roland Nenni repeated that he could not confirm, could not comment, or did not know the details asked of him. That included questions about why Groves was in the basement; what else or who else was in the basement; how they may have entered the residence; the number of gunshots fired; whether Groves was armed; and where on his body he was shot, among other questions.
Nenni did say that David Groves has a criminal history, but he did not know the details of that history. He did say Groves was on parole at the time of his death.
Regarding leads and suspects, Chief Nenni said his department is pursuing several leads currently. He would neither confirm nor deny whether there are suspects in the shooting.
Nenni did attempt to offer some consolation to anyone living in the West State Street neighborhood.
"There's nothing to indicate that this was just a random act – that Mr. Groves was just walking down the street, and someone arbitrarily shot him," Nenni said. "So we've determined that there is no danger. This is an isolated incident."
Nenni said no other details will be released to the public, until such a time that the investigation has properly concluded.
