Just before 2:00pm today, Genesee County residents experienced the effects of a magnitude 5.9 earthquake centered far away in the state of Virginia. The quake was reportedly along a fault line 3.7 miles deep in the earth.
A short tremor was felt around our area. Henry Starowitz, who lives on Batavia’s south side, immediately called WBTA to report the tremor in his house.
Henry says sometimes his house shakes a bit when trains go by – but this was bigger.
"It was about twice as bad as the coal cars coming by," he says. "Things began to shake...my mother had some artificial flowers in a vase nearby, and they started to shake. A couple girls were walking by the house and they mentioned feeling it."
No major damages were reported here or in the area of the epicenter.
