WBTA News presents our third installment of "Attica at 40: In Our Own Words," one day prior to the 40th anniversary of the 5-day Attica Prison Riot.
Former WBTA Program Director Frank Mangefrida was sitting down to coffee with then-Sheriff Frank Gavel on September 9th, 1971. When the Sheriff took a phone call and looked up wide-eyed at Mangefrida, he knew something was up.
Five days later, Frank was at the door of Batavia's St. Jerome Hospital, as injured Attica prison guards were taken inside. With no good excuse to enter the hospital, Frank turned to an old friend...who happened to be a doctor.
The problem was: even with a friend in high places, Frank had no ID and only an obvious tape recorder in his hand...
