A young boy playing with a lighter started a fire that left his family of eight homeless on Sunday afternoon.

The fire, at 23 Harvester Ave., was reported by a New York State Trooper on patrol.
The trooper reported seeing flames streaming from the second floor rear of the two-story wood frame home.
As Batavia firemen arrived at the scene it was determined that all occupants had safely escaped.
Batavia Fire Chief James Maxwell said the fire originated in a second floor rear bedroom where the boy, believed to be 10-years-old, was playing with a lighter. The chief said two adults and six children lived in the house.
He declined to release the name of the family.
The city's real property tax record showed the house owned by Denise Young and had an assessed value of $34,000.
The fire chief declared the house a total loss.
