New York State Troopers say they've arrested two visitors to the Attica State Correctional Facility, for allegedly trying to smuggle knives into the prison.
Both arrests happened on Sunday morning. The first was just before 10:00am, when Renee Carryl-Roshandra of Brooklyn, NY, walked into the prison to visit her godfather, currently incarcerated for robbery.
Carryl-Roshandra was frisked at the entrance, as is normal procedure for visitors. Police say she was found with a 5½-inch scalpel in her right-front pocket. She told prison guards that she was an EMT in Brooklyn and had simply forgotten the medical knife was in her pocket.
State Police responded and arrested Carryl-Roshandra for second-degree promoting prison contraband. She was jailed on $1,000 bail.
Later Sunday morning, Anthion Rasheed-Saunders also came to the visitors center, to see his brother. Rasheed-Saunders was screened by metal detectors at the gate and set-off alarms twice.
Police say a short search led to discovery of a secret pocket, sewn into Rasheed-Saunders' underwear. A small knife was hidden inside the pocket.
Anthion Rasheed-Saunders was also jailed in lieu of $1,000 bail at Wyoming County Jail.
