A Bergen sex-offender will spend 20 years to life in prison. 45-year-old Stephen Stone plead guilty to predatory sexual assault in county court Thursday.
Stone raped several young girls over the course of ten years. When they first started being abused the victims were as young as 6, 11 and 14 years old and were subject to 100 acts of abuse by Stone.
District Attorney Kevin Finnel said during presentencing investigations, Stone continually tried to minimalize and rationalize his behavior. He said Stone only even recognized one of his victims.
Defense Attorney William Harper said Stone was abused when he was a child and didn’t know it was wrong at the time. Harper said he felt Stone did show remorse for the victims.
Judge Robert Noonan ask Stone if there was anything he had to say before he was sentenced. Stone muttered to the Judge that this was in his hands.
Before he brought down the sentence Judge Noonan said the details of the case were the most disturbing things he’s ever heard and Stone’s abuse when he was younger is no excuse for his crimes.
