An elderly Oakfield man was killed cutting down a tree on his property.

The body of 84-year-old Laverne M. Bridges was found in about a half mile behind his Fisher Road home.

Investigators believe Bridges was cutting a 10-inch diameter tree with a chain saw when the tree came down, striking Bridges in the head.

Chief Deputy Gordon Dibble with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office said Bridges was last seen yesterday afternoon

"3 O'clock in the afternoon was the last time his son talked to him. Come this morning his friend was looking for him for breakfast, he didn't show up, his friend came and checked on him, talked to his son on the phone, went back to look for him and found him," said Dibble.

Dibble said Bridges lived alone and maintained the property where his body was found in a park-like setting.
