United Memorial Medical Center announced $2.1-million in renovations to their maternity department Tuesday.

Funding for the project has been earmarked within the non-profit hospital’s budget over a lenghty period of time.

The State Health Department has approved UMMC’s plan to revitalize their maternity patient rooms located on the fourth floor.

UMMC Spokeswoman Colleen Flynn said the project is slated to begin by this fall.

“They’ll be renovated to include private bathrooms. That’s currently something that we don’t have, we only have a couple rooms with private bathrooms the rest of the bathrooms are shared or located in the hallway. So each patient room now will have its own private bathroom along with a private shower and more comfortable accommodations,” said Flynn.

Flynn said the remodeling will extend into the visitor restrooms, storage areas, staff offices and a portion of the nursery on the fourth floor.

The last renovations to be done to the maternity department were in 2009 for the delivery areas.

UMMC averages 500 births each year for the past decade. Over 600 babies are expected to be born at UMMC in 2012.
