The trial of an Orleans County man accused of killing his teenage sister-in-law was scheduled to begin Wednesday, but 23-year old Carlos Cardenas accepted a plea deal instead.
Jury selection was scheduled to begin Wednesday morning, but potential jurors were turned away from the court house.
Cardenas pled guilty to second degree murder in the death of 15 year old Katherine Sanchez.
Police say Cardenas gave a signed confession admitting he had sex with Sanchez and then strangled her and hid her body in the basement of his Albion home last January.
In court a shackled Cardenas used an interpreter for his verbal confession to the judge.
He said quote: He put his hands around Sanchez’s neck, because she was screaming.
Cardenas faces a minimum of 15 years to life in prison and a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison. He could also be deported.
