Congresswoman Kathy Hochul is pushing legislation that could make it easier for veterans to get jobs.
Hochul introduced the Vocational Employment and Technical Skills Act or VETS Act in to congress Thursday.
The bill would allow veterans to receive professional certifications in skills they performed while members of the armed services.
Hochul said it’s a common sense piece of legislation.
"There’s a lot of skills that they’re developing and when they come back home they’re not getting credit for it. Some states have a lengthy certification process and they have to spend time with an apprentice, undertaking on the job training before they’ll allow you to operate in the field and we’re simply saying give these veterans credit for the time they’ve spent doing this in the military,” said Hochul.
Hochul said she hopes it will also ease veterans transition into civilian life through finding employment.
