John Cabrera Faces more Charges
There are more charges for the alleged St. Paul’s Lutheran Church burglar.
22-year old John Cabrera appeared in Batavia City court today answer to a slue of charges.
During the hearing a shackled Cabrera waived his right for a preliminary hearing for the church burglary charges. All of those charges will now be reviewed by the County grand jury.
Cabrera is now facing criminal charges of escape, burglary and criminal mischief after attempting to escape from the County jail Tuesday night.
During the escape Cabrera was assisted by inmate Paul Doctor who allegedly hoisted him up so he could get into the ceiling, from there Cabrera allegedly made his way into a corrections officer’s locker room and stole a guard’s boots and uniform. He then made his way into the basement to before being caught by deputies.
District Attorney Larry Friedman said Cabrera is being criminally charged, because he successfully made it out of the jail area before he was caught.
Cabrera is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
Batavia Downs begins Racing Season Tonight
Horse racing returns to Batavia Downs tonight.
Horses will race in three divisions to kick off the local New York Sire Stakes tonight. The Sire Stakes is the premier and oldest harness racing program in the nation. The first Saturday of the season will also feature five Excelsior Series division races, with each worth more than $12,000 apiece.

Rochester Woman Faces Felony Charges
A Rochester woman is facing a number of felony charges.
27-year-old Brittany Benway allegedly used a stolen license to cash several checks at a bank in Alden.
After bank workers became suspicious and questioned her, Benway fled the scene. State police later caught up with her and made the arrest.
Benway was charged with Possession of a forged instrument, identity theft, grand larceny, scheme to defraud and a misdemeanor charge of attempted grand larceny.
Benway is in the Erie County Holding Center in lieu of $25-thousand cash bail.
