So far the weather for the Labor Day week-end in the Genesee County has been just perfect. Yesterday under beautiful sunny skies the temperature reached 83 degrees in Batavia. The low yesterday was 56 degrees. The average for yesterday was 69.5 degrees and that’s about two degrees above average for a September 2nd in Batavia. The good weather could end today though. Sunny skies this morning are forecast to give way to a 30 percent chance of showers this afternoon and tonight. The high today is forecast to be in the low 80’s.
A Byron woman has been charged with petit larceny after she allegedly left the Kwik Fill convenience store on Jackson Street in Batavia without paying for some items. 27 year old Patricia Anderson of the Walkers Corners Road in Byron was issued an appearance ticket for Batavia City Court for a later date.
Genesee County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 29 year old Sarah Nichols of Pinehollow Drive in Batavia after she allegedly falsely reported an incident. Nichols report that someone took items from her car at the Wal-Mart parking lot. That proved to be untrue and Nichols was charged with falsely reported an incident. She was given an appearance ticket for Town of Batavia Court for September 20th.
An effort has been launched to revive the ferry across the Niagara River between the village of Youngstown and Niagara on the Lake on the Canadian side. A ferry used to connect the two communities, but it has not operated since 1980. Niagara County lawmaker Clyde Burmaster is a big supporter of the plan. He says increased border security and the need for multiple approvals in the U.S. and Canada are obstacles, but he believes they can be figured out.
Two women were injured after their vehicle crashed into a building in downtown Rochester. Police say the driver was apparently under the influence of alcohol when she crashed through the wall of a building on West Main Street. It appears the car lost control and struck a tree, crashing backwards into the building that houses Elite Bar and Grill. The unidentified victims were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, and police say charges will be filed against the driver.
Twenty-eight-year-old competitive eater Joey "Jaws" Chestnut set a new world record yesterday at the National Buffalo Wing Festival. Chestnut ate 191 chicken wings, adding up to about eight pounds, in 12 minutes. Runner-up Sonya Thomas, a 105-pound competitive eater from Virginia, ate just over six-pounds of chicken.
Buffalo State University Police are advising students not to walk around town alone at night. Two separate mugging incidents took place near campus this weekend. On Friday night, three male students were beaten and robbed, and one was shot near Grant and Potomac Avenue. Early Saturday morning, two female students were assaulted and robbed near Richmond and Dorchester.
