Pembroke may be on the list of possible locations for a new veteran’s cemetery, but some town officials might be opposed to the idea.
Veterans Service Administrator William Joyce said no one has officially objected to the locations yet, but he discussed his concerns with the County Legislatures Public Service Committee last night.
“When I was at the Town Hall they felt that, that was a lot of taxable land to be taken off the tax base and it’s prime farm land, one location is more prime than the other one is, and they just didn’t feel that is was a good idea to take that amount off acreage off the tax rolls,” said Joyce.
Two pieces of land in Pembroke are being considered as a location for a new vet’s cemetery one is onIndian Falls and Route 77 and the other is on Route 5 and Cleveland Road.
Joyce said he feels either parcel would be the perfect location for a vet’s cemetery, because they’re very serene; pointing out that the one in Buffalo is across from an industrial park.
He said a decision on the cemetery location is still a few years off, but it does need preliminary approval by the town to proceed.
