It’s been 41 years since a riot took place at the correctional facility in Attica. The four day riot began on September 9th and ended on this day back in 1971. 43 people died during the course of the riot after a group of inmates gained control of the prison in protest of the conditions there.
Correctional Facility Superintendent Mark Bradt said in observance of the anniversary there will be a memorial ceremony at the Attica prison Thursday night.
“It’s really a time to remember and reflect and to honor those that lost their lives and those who survived and each family member and how it impacted their lives for the incident that occurred 41 years ago,” said Bradt.
Over 100 people are expected to attend tonight’s State ceremony that begins at 5:15p.m. “The Forgotten Victims of Attica” commenced their remembrance ceremony this morning at 9:43a.m.
