Alpina Foods, the first yogurt maker to build in the Genesee Valley Agri-business Park, officially opened its doors today.
The Colombia-based company held an Open House featuring Representative Kathy Hochul, New York State Senator Michael Ranzenhofer, and Alpina upper management.
Alpina CEO Julian Jaramillo, above, describes why Batavia was the chosen location for its first U.S. plant:
"After searching and searching for the right location we came across Batavia and this specific site.We were greeted by all sorts of oportunities, committed officials and members of the community that helped us realize that this was the correct choice." 
Alpina Vice President and General Manager Juan Pablo Fernandez says that making an addition in Batavia only adds to the company’s diversity:
"Having people that come from different regions of the country that join us in this effort, people that when I look in their eyes, they embrance what we are trying to do here. We are making our company stronger because we are bringing talent from the U.S.to make Alpina better."    
The company already employs 30 new workers and plan to add another 20 in the coming months. 
Representative Hochul was enthusiastic about Alpina’s decision to pick Batavia.

Alpina spent 18-million dollars on the yogurt plant in Batavia and has 10 other global manufacturing facilities in South America. Its products will be available in the area soon.
