The fire within the smoldering recycling pile at Hillcrest Industries in Attica may be extinguished, but there is still work to be done to make sure the situation stays safe for the community.

The State Department of Environmental Conservation will hold a public availability session Nov. 1 to answer questions from community members regarding the site.

Following a brief overview and introductions, DEC staff will be available throughout the evening to speak to the public personally or in a small group.

It will run from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Attica Senior School cafeteria.

Attica residents dealt with questionable air conditions and an awful smell for months and some of them have criticized the DEC’s action, or perceived lack-thereof. The federal Environmental Protection Agency was called in to remedy the situation last month.
