It may seem like Election Day has come and gone, but the Genesee County Board of Elections staff will begin counting absentee ballots today.

The City of Batavia has the only contested positions in the county. Brooks Hawley won one Council position, but the second spot between Republican Jim Russell and Democrat Laura Ricci was decided by fewer than 50 votes.

The Board of Elections says about 600 absentee ballots were requested for the city elections.

The process starts by determining if ballots were postmarked before the Nov. 5 deadline.
