Better hang up that cell phone while driving this week.
New York State Police are engaged in “Operation Hang-up” this week, it’s an all out crackdown on use of cell phones while driving along the Thruway.

Captain Mike Nigrelli with the State police tells WBTA News today that distractions, such as talking on the phone while driving, is dangerous. He also compared the compliance rate of cell phone laws to that of seat belts:

State police say the enforcement area includes the New York State Thruway from the Pennsylvania border to Rochester as well as the Niagara Thruway.

I recently received a citation for talking on a cell phone, and it cost $185. I am OK with that. But what about people that read while driving, or women putting on makeup while driving? I have since purchased a Bluetooth, which means I can talk hands free, but in order to dial out, or do voice mail, you still will have moments when you are distracted. I think text messaging is a bigger issue, that is not getting addressed...
