Two firefighters who were shot and seriously injured during a Christmas Eve ambush in Webster have been released from the hospital.
Joseph Hofstetter was shot in the pelvis and Theodore Scardino was hit in the shoulder and knee by gunman William Spengler Jr. Officials say Spengler set fire to his Lake Road home and started shooting firefighters when they arrived on the scene, killing Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka.
Meanwhile, donations are pouring in to the West Webster Volunteer Fireman's Association to help the families of the victims. In fact, the Town of Batavia Fire Department raised $7,000 this weekend with their boot drive.
An online White House petition concerning the firefighters reached the mandatory 25,000 signatures to be considered by the Obama Administration. The petition calls for awarding all four firefighters with the Medal of Freedom – the highest civilian award in the country. Noting their selfless commitment to protect the community, U.S. Senator from New York Chuck Schumer voiced his support for the petition’s request today and urged prompt and fair review by the White House.
