Four police officers are being hailed for their actions in the Christmas Eve deadly shooting in Webster.

Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering says Webster officers Mark Reed, Kevin Hall and Shaun Welch along with Irondequoit police officer Doug Pollock likely saved lives due to their actions at the ambush at William Spengler Jr.'s home.

“The actions...directly impacted the decisions of the shooter," Chief Pickering said. "The shooter never anticipated immediate police response to this fire. The shooter felt that he would have unchallenged opportunity to kill our firefighters.”

Pickering says the officers returned fire at Spengler as he shot at authorities, and worked to set up a perimeter to keep other officers out of harm's way.
