The first STOP DWI Crackdown of 2013 begins today in anticipation of Super Bowl Sunday.
Genesee County STOP DWI Coordinator Frank Ciaccia says that this weekend is statistically the second or third most dangerous day of the year to be on the roads.
“It’s a long game," Ciaccia said. "People star early and they watch until the end and there’s a lot of drinking and it makes for a dangerous situation.”
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, City of Batavia Police, and the LeRoy Police Department will coordinate to blanket the area with extra patrols.
Ciaccia says law enforcement will be looking for both alcohol and drug impairment.
“We have special drug enforcement officers that will be part of the crackdown. They will be on scene and be able to test to see if someone’s on drugs and of they are we’ll be making an arrest.”
The Super Bowl STOP DWI Crackdown continues through Feb. 4.
