The Batavia Fire Department is replenishing its ranks after a gambling scandal took down a pair of firefighters and three employees are retiring.
Chief Jim Maxwell says four new recruits, plus one lateral transfer from Canandaigua, will be joining the fire house. They are:
-Ryan Barber, a volunteer in Henrietta who recently bought a house in Bergen with his wife,
-Nathan Kinne, a volunteer from Niagara County who will also be relocating to Genesee County,
-Christina Marinaccio, Batavia’s second ever female firefighter and a current LeRoy firefighter, and
-Ryan Whitcombe, who doesn’t have experience but whose brother is currently with the department.
Maxwell says the four of them are heading to Utica for training April 1st, will graduate July 3rd and then come back to Batavia to complete internal training and get their assignments.
Brian Bordinaro and Gregory Phillips were recently sentenced in a bookmaking operation and were forced to give up their jobs, and three other members are retiring. Maxwell says more positions will be opening up once more retirements are official.
