Three local men accused of illegal spoorts betting, two of them former Batavia City firemen,  received their formal sentencing today in City Court.

There was one change from a previous court appearance March 5. Brian Bordinaro, Gregory Phillips and Lance Engel were sentenced by Judge Robert Balbick to a weekend work release program over the next 90 -- not 120 -- calendar days as well as three years probation and a $1,000 fine each.

They will start the weekend work release program this Easter weekend at 7 a.m. Saturday.

The prosecutions case was crippled when allegations surfaced that a Sheriff’s deputy working the case was a former customer of the book making ring. District Attorney Lawrence Friedman would not comment on that, calling it a sheriff’s personnel matter.
