As time passes and WWII veterans pass on, getting a group of Genesee CountyWWII veterans together for a social event is all the more special.
The American Legion Botts Fiorito Post is hosting a WWII remembrance this Sunday starting at 1 p.m. at the Post’s home at 53 West Main Street, LeRoy.
Jerry Diskin, the First Vice Commander of the American legion post 576 in LeRoy, says what started as a casual conversation, has turned into an event to look forward to.
“Don Vescovi, our Adjutant, found that we had well over 50 members that were WWII veterans,” Diskin said. “So that told us that this was certainly a worthwhile effort and there was certainly a number of them around.”
Diskin says about 20 area WWII veterans are attending which he says is a much better reception than he initially thought. He says representatives from different agencies from the state, county and Village of LeRoy with be in attendance and make remarks.
“The idea is to have more of a social hour for these gentlemen to sit back and renew old acquaintances and enjoy the afternoon," Diskin said.
