One person is dead after a head-on, two-car crash in Pembroke.
The collision occurred just before 2:30 this afternoon at Main Road, or Route 5 near Lake Road in Pembroke.
Chief Deputy Gordon Dibble of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office says a Chevy Cavalier was driving eastbound and a 2011 Toyota Siena van westbound on Route 5 in Pembroke.
“It appears in this early stage in the investigation that the van crossed over into the Cavalier’s lane, or into the eastbound lane, where they crashed head-on," he said at the scene. "The driver of the Cavalier was apparently dead on impact. The driver of the Toyota was taken to ECMC.”
Chief Deputy Dibble says the driver of the van’s condition appears to have worsened after the injuries were initially thought to be not that serious.
The driver of the two cars were the only people involved. There are no independent witnesses known at this time.
“This stretch of road has more than its share of accidents over the years," Chief Deputy Dibble said. "They’re not always head-on, some of them just go off the curve; but it’s got a history.”
Chief Deputy Dibble says law enforcement had a short conversation with the driver of the van, but they are in the process of collecting physical evidence and continuing the investigation.
UPDATE (5:49): The Genesee County Sheriff's Office has released the names of those involved.
61-year-old Mary J. Smith of Pembroke was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the van, 55-year-old Victoria A. Zimmer of Clarence, was transported to ECMC by Mercy Flight with serious injuries.
Chief Deputy Dibble says the cause of the crash is not immediately apparent.
