The local branch of the International Association of FireFighters will be out in force on Court Street, carrying their boots at the red lights and looking for loose change.
It’s all part of the national “Fill The Boot” campaign to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

IAFF Local Chapter President Greg Ireland explains the history of "Fill The Boot; says he gets to see first-hand where the money goes; and talks about some of the more memorable contributions.

Firefighters soliciting funds at intersections has become a common occurence. No one questions the worthiness of the various causes they solicit for. However I think it is time for people to question whether or not it is demeaning for firefighters to solicit in this manner. If panhandlers or homeless people were to solicit in this manner, they would likely be arrested as Sec. 1157 of the NYS Vehicle&Traffic Law prohibits this type of activity. No police agency has the will to enforce this law against firefighters, but perhaps the time has come to do so.
