More women going to jail recently means the county needs more support.
The Genesee County Legislature has approved a $205,000 increase in jail appropriations for female housing and $15,000 for overtime.
The jail averages 10-15 female inmates a day and more on weekends.
Sheriff Gary Maha says that five years ago, the jail spent $125,000 on female inmates, but the office is almost at $300,000 so far this year.
The county jail does not have separate holding areas so women have to be transported to jails in neighboring counties. Genesee County is responsible for the expenses like transportation, a deputy’s time during transport and paying other jails to host women.
