Rain posed the biggest challenge at Saturday’s Genesee ARC Friends & Family 5K/Mary Anne Graney Memorial, but according to Race Director Sandy Konfederath, “The sunny disposition of event participants and volunteers prevailed!” About 200 5K runners and walkers and 100 additional fun walkers ran, walked and in some cases were wheeled through through the certified country course.
In the end, Elba Resident Michael Richenberg made good on his 2012 promise to return this year for a fifth straight win on the course. Richenberg crossed the finish line at 18:24. The 24 year-old holds the course record of 17:45 set in 2011.
The first female across the finish line was three-time winner Jill Graney of Buffalo with a time of 22:46.
First and second place prizes were awarded in eight age groups for the 5K run.
Age 12 and under(F) – Claire Skowronski, Lewiston, 24:05 and Natalie Choate, Spencerport, 26.18; (M) John Choate, Spencerport, 27:13 and A.J. Drecshel, Holley, 29:22.
13 to 18 - (F) Katelin White, Lewiston, 27:19 and Grace Callaghan, Holley, 28:36; (M) Michael Skowronski, Lewiston, 20:14 (3rd overall) and Ryan George, Cowlesville, 25:31.
19 to 29 - (F) Kara Rykert, Corfu, 24:28 and Tanya Khan, East Amherst, 28:40; (M) Matthew Dispenza, Batavia, 22:06 and Josh Fantauzzo, Rochester, 24:08.
30 to 39 – (F) Sheila Lemcke, Albion, 24:56 and Jessica Solis, Batavia, 26:46; (M) Jeff Tress, Batavia, 22:08 and Bill Sofia, Batavia, 24:24.
40 to 49 – (F) Nicole , Attica, 26:19 and Georganne Lang, Batavia, 27:12; (M) David Chua, Batavia, 22:26 and Jimmy Addona, Newark, 23:13.
50 to 59 – (F) Janice Spiotta, Batavia, 26:03 and Mary Marullo, Rochester, 32:07; (M) David O'Leary, Rochester, 19:29 (2nd overall) and Tom Williams, Batavia, 22:00 (4th overall).
60 to 69 – (F) Patty Sheridan-Vargo, Buffalo, 34:19 (no 2nd place finisher female); (M) James Laskett, Batavia, 22:55 and Tom Moran, Batavia, 23:05.
70 and over – (F) Karen Downs, Attica, 38:30 (no 2nd place finisher female); (M) Sid Bolton, Albion, 27:42 and Ken Callaghan, North Chili, 29:29.
Placing in the top three in the 5K walk division were: Matt Addona, Newark, 40:27; Moira Glidden, East Bethany, 41:43 and Lisa Tangent, Elba, 43:23.
Event participants included residents of Virginia and Texas and this year there was also a European runner. Annie Bjornhaug is an exchange student from Norway staying with the Greene family of Varysburg.
