In January, Assemblyman Steve Hawley says he proposed legislation to rename Route 98 from Alexander to Lake Ontario “The Genesee-Orleans Veterans Memorial Highway.”
As most political things go, he expected an extended process. However, he says Gov. Andrew Cuomo surprised him by approving it just in time for Veterans Day.
“I’m very, very pleased and thankful the governor did that,” he said. “As the ranking minority member on the Veterans’ Affair Committee at the state assembly, sponsor of six Patriot Trips to Washington, D.C., and as a proud veteran myself, this means an awful lot not only to me but most importantly to all the veterans who have served our great country.”
That portion of Route 98 to become the Genesee-Orleans Veterans Memorial Highway runs approximately 35 miles.
It was co-sponsored by State Senators Michael Ranzenhofer and George Maziarz.
