A homeless man who passes through Batavia occasionally is accused of stealing cash from collection receptacles at Batavia churches.

59-year-old Stephen Quigley is charged with petit larceny and was jailed on $1,000 bail.

City of Batavia Police says it received reports of periodic larcenies of collection receptacles, the first coming in January 2012. They say Quigley allegedly used a device to extract the money which was similar in all reported incidences.

Today someone recognized Quigley in the area of Main and Jefferson from a past incident and called police.

Police say Quigley says he regularly travels from Ohio to Syracuse and passes through Batavia on the way.

A search of archives shows that Quigley was arrested in 2009 by LeRoy Police for allegedly stealing money from candle prayer offerings at a church in the Village.
