A Kohl’s store is coming to the Town Centre in Batavia.
“It’s exciting to see another store come to Batavia,” Genesee County Director of Planning Felipe Oltramari said. “Hopefully we have enough market for everybody to share that.”
The Menomonee Falls, Wis., company is seeking approval to develop a store in the 57,000 square foot area that once contained green houses and other outdoor equipment at Lowe’s. The name of the proposed tenant is actually whited-out on the application, but Planning Board members were able to easily infer the Kohl’s name.
The site plan for more retail coming to the Batavia Towne Center also shows a Marshall’s and a Five Below, but it’s not official.
Every business in the plaza except Target leases space from COR Development. Oltramari says it’s a different situation for Kohl’s which makes it difficult to predict when the store will open.
“Kohl’s is purchasing and subdividing that part out and then building on their own land,” Oltramari said. “That process take a little bit longer and obviously they haven’t begun construction yet.”
Oltramari says it’s a positive thing to be able to reuse preexisting retail space. The Dick’s Sporting Goods is only 34,000 square feet which still left over 100,000 unused square feet leftover from Lowe’s to fill.
Kohl’s sells upscale fashion and housing items similar to a department store. It would be just south of the new Dick’s Sporting Goods. Kohl’s has seven other stores in Western New York.
