A man is dead and a female passenger hospitalized after a car overturns and falls into water today in the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge.
Deputies say at about 11:30 this morning a car was travelling south on Route 63 when the driver apparently lost control in the Town of Shelby near the Orleans-Genesee County line. The car ran off the road and overturned upside down in a flooded swampland.
A Shelby Fire Department pumper was utilized to drag the car out of the water. Both occupants were extricated by firefighters and transported by ground ambulance to Medina Memorial Hospital.
The man was pronounced dead an hour after the accident. The woman is being treated.
Deputies are withholding their names as they inform the families.
UPDATE (5:34 p.m.):
The Orleans County Sheriff's Office identifies the deceased as David Russo, 43, of Stafford. He was pronounced dead at 12:31 p.m. at Medina Memorial Hospital. The passenger, who was later transferred from Medina Memorial Hospital to Highland Hospital in Rochester, is Lisa Stanley, 40, of LeRoy.
Deputies say the accident is still under investigation but weather and slippery road conditions were apparent contributing factors.
