Bitter cold wind chills have closed two area school districts this morning:

Batavia City Schools, St. Joe’s Catholic School and Oakfield- Alabama Central …are closed for the second day in a row.

The National Weather Service has continued the Wind Chill Warning until 11 o’clock this morning.
With our current temperature and winds, the wind chill right now is between 15 and 20 degrees below zero.
Batavia’s Bed, Bath and Beyond closed by fire that has destroyed most of the store’s inventory.
Fire broke out in the bedding section of the store on Veteran’s Memorial Drive around 4:30 yesterday afternoon.
Heavy smoke quickly filled the store.
Smoke spread to adjacent stores Michaels and Petco where animals had to be moved.
The store is expected to be closed for several days as smoke and water damaged merchandise is replaced.
No cause has been determined.
If Batavia City Manager Jason Molino expects to get some help in the form of an assistant manager, he’ll have to continue to sell city council on the idea.
Molino has put $77,000 in the budget to fill the assistant city manager’s position, a post he eliminated several years ago.
Ward Councilmen John Canale and Pier Cippilone are firmly in Molino’s corner supporting the expense.
Others, such as at-large councilmen Gene Jankowski and John DeLeo and ward councilwoman Kasthy Briggs are opposed.
Council continued their budget deliberations last night.
Two smaller initiatives in Molino’s budget, the installation of free WiFi service in some public spaces and an electric car charging station, appeared doomed.
The final budget must be adopted by April 1.
Despite recent bitter cold temperatures, construction is continuing on the Harbor Center hockey themed development in downtown Buffalo.  Currently more than 18-hundred tons of structural steel columns and girders are being erected on the fifth floor.  Once the structure is in place construction can begin on the project centerpiece, the two large ice rinks and state of the art hockey training center.  The project remains on schedule, with everything but the hotel set to open in the fall.
