In the last year the unemployment rate in Upstate New York has made great strides.
According to information released this morning by the state labor department, the current unemployment rate for the 52-county area is 6.4 percent. One year ago, it was 8.4 percent.
It’s not all good news, though. Private-sector jobs grew by just 0.6 percent over the past year.
In Genesee County, the unemployment rate for December is 6.2 percent, which is unchanged from last month and a more-than-two-percent drop from 2012. Also, 700 fewer people are unemployed in the county from a year ago.
Orleans County fell out of the top 4 highest unemployment rates in the state. It stands at 8.4 percent for December, while in Wyoming County, it’s 7.3 percent.
The statewide unemployment rate is 6.9 percent. Rochester and Buffalo’s are 6.1 and 6.5 percent, respectively.
