New York was the third largest producer of milk in the nation last year.
The dairy industry is the state’s leading agricultural sector.
In 2012, milk production increased over 2 percent, while it was just 0.4 percent nationally.
Governor Cuomo lauded the accomplishment, saying, quote “Milk production is fueling thousands of jobs across upstate New York, revitalizing communities and providing a variety of nutritious products for millions of consumers across the country.”
It’s the first time since 2009 that New York has been in the top 3 milk producers in the country. Officials say it’s due to the state’s booming yogurt industry.
