You may remember the two vehicle accident back on Black Friday last November. Now Batavia Police have charged the driver of one of the vehicles involved with possession of marijuana and driving under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. 46 year old Michael Sanders of Columbia Avenue in Batavia reportedly made a left turn in front of a pick-up truck at the corner of Oak Street and Richmond Avenue in Batavia. Sanders car struck the pick-up which then left the roadway and hit two pedestrians. In all six persons were involved in the post Thanksgiving accident. In addition to the possession of marijuana and driving under the influence of drugs, Sanders also has been charged with Driving with Ability Impaired with Drugs for a second time in ten years. Batavia police say that all six persons, Saunders, three persons in the truck and the two pedestrians are still being actively treated for injuries they sustained in the crash.
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Department would like to talk with four persons in connection with the fire at Bed Bath and Beyond this past January. Sheriff’s Investigator Kris Kautz says the fire appears to be a case of arson, although it still is not completely certain. The pictures of the four individuals are on the Batavian. In a story on our news partner the Batavian, Kautz is requesting the public’s help in identifying the persons in the store that day. None of the four are considered suspects. Any one with any information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at 343-5000.
Batavia Police are asking for help in identifying the driver of car that stuck a home at 219 Liberty Street Thursday night. The hit and run car stuck the house and then fled away. The car is described as a silver or light blue four door sedan. The vehicle was last seen headed southbound on Liberty Street towards South Jackson Street. According to police, the car should have heavy front end damage especially on the driver side corner. A Batavia woman is in jail today after being picked-up on an arrest warrant for violation of probation. 19 year old Samantha Tennity of Hall Street in Batavia was arrested on West Main Street in Batavia. She was arraigned in Batavia Town Court and sent to jail with bail set at one thousand dollars cash or two thousand dollars bond. Sheriff’s Deputies say Tennity is also the subject of an active arrant from the Batavia Police.
44 year old Jeffrey Smith of Vinton Road in Irondequoit, a Rochester suburb, has been charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. Smith was arrested by Sheriff’s Deputies after he left the Batavia Wal-Mart store and drove away with suspected stolen merchandise.
A Batavia High School Senior is the new Mr. Batavia. Spencer Hubbard won the title Friday night during the second annual Mr. Batavia contest at Batavia High School. More than twenty two hundred dollars was raised for the winner’s charity which for Spencer Hubbard is Habitat for Humanity. Hubbard is planning to attend the University of Tampa on a twenty five thousand dollars scholarship. He is majoring in journalism.
