A church fire on the Tonawanda Indian Reservation is being called suspicious today by the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Gary Maha says a call came in at about 10:30 last night for the report of a fire at the Tonawanda Indian Presbyterian Church on Meadeville Road.
When deputies arrived on scene, the fire was out. Alabama’s fire company responded as well.
Maha says several factors in the fire point to arson.
"It appears to be suspicious," says Maha, "and there appears to be several ignition points inside the church. There was damage done to the church - the windows were broken out; the rear door was kicked in."
FBI investigators have been notified, but Maha says that’s simply protocol in case more advanced technology is needed. County Sheriff’s investigators continue to look into the fire today. There are currently no suspects.
