A state supreme court judge allows the release of some, but not all records from the Attica prison riot.

The state Attorney General’s Office sought the official documents detailing the 1971 deadly prison uprising.

AG Eric Schneiderman’s Office released a statement which said that the judge’s decision is “a step forward in our effort to shed more light on one of the most tragic events in the history of our state.”

It said the office balances the needs of the public interest in understanding the events to prevent future tragedies with the need to protect the secrecy of grand jury proceedings.

A total of 43 people died in the Attica riot.
