A Bergen man is accused of leaving three small dogs in his car in 81 degree temperatures.

It’s always hotter inside the car than outside without any ventilation, and deputies say the dogs were left in a car that was 116 degrees on the seats, 122 degrees on the dash, according to a laser thermometer.

Ralph Stevenson, 60, of Clinton Street, was arrested this afternoon at Walmart on Veterans Memorial Drive in Batavia on a charge of confinement of a companion animal in a vehicle in extreme heat.

The Genesee County sheriff’s office says a first offense results in a fine between 50 and 100-dollars.

Stevenson is due in Batavia Town Court June 23.

Deputies remind residents that even if you’re going inside a store for a short time or parked in the shade, it’s still too hot in the car for dogs without proper ventilation.
