The LeRoy Police Department is warning residents to be aware of scams over the phone and computer.

Officers have received two reports of calls recently from people pretending to be a relative out of state who landed in jail and need money to get out.

The caller asked the resident to go to a nearby pharmacy and purchase a green dot card or other transferrable funds to send money for bail.

The department says the scammers will steal as much money as the call recipient is willing to give.

If you receive suspicious calls or emails, contact LeRoy Police before sending any money, so they can help determine if it’s a scam. Officers say once the money is sent there is little chance of getting it back or identifying the scammer.
