The treasurer of the Oakfield Fire Department was arrested today by State Police in Batavia for allegedly misappropriating department funds. The arrest stems from an audit and investigation by the office of State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.
Samantha Hilchey, 31 of Batavia, was arrested and charged with grand larceny in the third degree, a class D felony. Hilchey was arraigned in Batavia town court and is due back in court on July 7. She accused of making more than $6,000 in unauthorized transactions with department funds, including paying her personal utility bills and making cash withdrawals.
Comptroller DiNapoli’s audit of the fire department is expected to be finalized in the coming months.
"Instead of safeguarding department funds, this individual took advantage of her position to pay her personal bills and make unauthorized cash withdrawals," said State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. "I want to thank department officials for helping bring this situation to light and to the State Police for working closely with my staff as we continue our audit and investigation into the department's finances."
