The Oakfield Fire Department says it is “shocked and saddened” by the alleged larceny of funds.
An audit by the state comptroller’s office led to a grand larceny charge against the department’s treasurer, 31-year-old Samantha Hilchey.
She’s accused of bilking the volunteer department for $6,000 to pay personal utility bills and to make cash withdrawals.
In a statement today, a representative for the Oakfield Fire Department says it apologizes for the mistrust or bad publicity this may inject in the community.
It says it’s reevaluating its financial policies to prevent this from happening in the future.
