The Oakfield Fire Department has issued its first public comment on the scandal that has led to criminal charges against the fire department treasurer.
Fire Department President John Igoe, in a prepared statement, said the department is “shocked and saddened” by the suspected theft.
A State audit led to a charge of Grand Larceny against the fire department’s treasurer, Samantha Hilchey.
Hilchey is accused of diverting more than $6,000 of the fire department’s money to her personal use.
Igoe says the Oakfield Fire Department apologizes for the mistrust and bad publicity the incident may have caused the community.
He said the department is reevaluating its financial policies to prevent this from happening in the future.
