AT 5:46pm:

Firefighters are battling a blaze in Darien Center that apparently began as an appliance fire.

The fire was first reported around 4:35 this afternoon. Four fire companies were promptly summoned to the scene, including Batavia Fire's "Fast Crew." The involved home is on Route 20 / Broadway Road, between Route 77 and Warner Road. State Police shut down portions of Routes 20 and 77 for a time.

Firefighters were reportedly entering the structure near 5pm, but were beaten back by flames, smoke and heat. At last report from the scene, firefighters had successfully entered the structure and were going in shifts to open the structure for ventilation.

A ladder truck on-scene is providing relief from above, spraying water on the roof of the house, which had also become involved. A step ladder, earlier put up on the side of the house, had melted.

Firefighters continue to work towards controlling the blaze.

Portions of this report, supplied from the scene by Howard Owens, The Batavian
