New York State is holding on to its spot as the second highest producer of maple syrup in the country in 2014.  
Governor Andrew Cuomo says the sweet success is due in part to the hard work of the state's maple producers. 
Though the industry had many challenges this year after the long, cold months of February and March, producers used newer vacuum tubing, which kept the tapholes healthy and functioning. 
This year New York produced 546-thousand gallons of maple syrup with two-point-two million taps.

A Local flower shop is closing their doors
Flowers by Dick Burton are closing their doors this Monday evening.
Bates and Benjamin Harrison started the business out of a greenhouse back in the 1940s.
The company was then bought by Dick and Mary Burton and brought to Batavia.
John and Shelia Hamel have owned the flower shop for the last 34 years, keeping the original name.
They say it has become difficult to compete with internet business.

United Memorial Medical Center is participating in the Safe Motherhood effort.
The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology introduced it to combat maternal mortality in New York State. Its goal is to save the lives of women faced with severe complications during childbirth. The Empire State ranks 47th in the country in maternal mortality rate.
The program will provide maternal safety bundles with education videos, algorithms, checklists and other hands-on materials to help obstetric providers.

New York State is offering a new small loan program to assist homeowners on the brink of foreclosure.
Attorney General Eric Schniederman’s office announced the State Mortgage Assistance program this week. It will be open to the entire state in October.
Schniederman says loans of up to 40-thousand dollars could go to tax liens, second or third mortgages or back payments.
He says it could help homeowners refinance their homes.

Legislation adding 25 new family court judges in the state now has Governor Andrew Cuomo's signature. 
The family court system has warned of a serious backlog of cases and needed the support. 
Bill supporters say the family court caseloads have become unmanageable, and the judges who oversee them need this relief.
