They’ve laid the cornerstone on United Memorial Medical Center’s new surgical wing.
A short ceremony took place at 5:00pm this evening. The gray granite stone inscribed with "2010" was laid.
The multi-million dollar addition onto the front of UMMC has been going on for about a year now. Spokeswoman Colleen Flynn says the project is right on track.
"(The cornerstone) is a milestone for us in the project," says Flynn. "We are on schedule. We expect to take possession of the building in mid-December.
"Then we have to go through a terminal cleaning. And we're hoping that we can start our first (medical) cases in the first week of January."
Ground was broken on the project on October 15th, 2009. Flynn says she thinks today's date, just over a year later, was appropriate for the cornerstone ceremony.
